The latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup features a few minutes of several different topics. Jason and Donald begin by looking at Duke's recent activity in the transfer portal. While we don't know the name of the next player Jon Scheyer expects to sign, we are getting some interesting hints about what type of player it will be. After that, the guys spend a few moments getting giddy over what they have seen in recent weeks from incoming freshman big man Khaman Maluach as he has faced off against the grown men of the Basketball Africa League. Whew, it has really been impressive. The guys take a break and then get into a quick conversation about the fancy new scoreboard coming to Cameron. And then they wrap it all up by talking about a major lawsuit that the NCAA wants to settle which could effectively end the private NIL era by making all teams actually pay the players a fair wage. This episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup is all about the future of the program... both in terms of the transfer portal and incoming freshmen. First up, Jason and Donald welcome former Purdue wing Mason Gillis to Durham as the newest addition to the team. Gillis is a "dawg" who will not be out-toughed on the floor and will provide excellent defense to go with experienced leadership. He's also a dynamite outside shooter. If you had a machine to design the perfect fit for next year's Duke team, it would probably spit out Mason Gillis. And the DBR Podcast also welcomes a special guest to this episode. Another one! The Blue Devils have landed maybe their best player of the transfer portal era with the addition of Maliq Brown. Brown is a 6-8, long-armed elite defender in the post and the Duke Basketball Roundup gang are thrilled to be adding a guy who was voted to the All-ACC Defensive team. Jason and Donald spend some time breaking down Maliq's game and, more importantly, how his skill set will fit alongside the rest of the Duke roster. But, the portal giveth and the portal taketh away. It is with a very heavy heart that Duke fans bid goodbye to Sean Stewart. More than anyone else to enter the portal, this one stung because we all saw glimpses of a truly elite athlete who has a path to be one of the most exciting players in all of college basketball. We’ve reached the emotional portion of the season where we bid farewell to a couple more players, Jeremy Roach and Jaden Schutt. Donald and Jason react to their departures on DBR Bites 45. Jeremy Roach, our two-time captain and soon-to-be Duke graduate, will test the NBA Draft waters and will also enter the transfer portal. We’ve followed Roach’s career since he was in high school, so it’s bittersweet to watch him leave Duke. But, we beam with pride when recalling his career and get into some of the thought process behind him deciding to enter the portal. It is with a heavy heart, but with clear eyes, that the Duke Basketball Roundup says goodbye to Jared McCain, Kyle Filipowski, and Jaylen Blakes. Flip and Mac both declared for the NBA draft on Friday and seem fated to go somewhere around the late lottery. They stand to make millions of dollars and leave behind a legacy of inspiring play that led Duke to great heights. And Jaylen Blakes, who has performed the remarkable feat of graduating from Duke in just three years, now enters the NCAA transfer portal in search of a larger role on a different team in his final year of eligibility. We will miss all three of them oh so much and be rooting for them to succeed beyond their dreams wherever they go next. The Blue Devils get some great news for the 2024-25 campaign as it has been revealed that point-guard Tyrese Proctor will return to Durham to captain what is widely expected to be the preseason #1 team in the land. The Duke Basketball Roundup Podcast team are positively giddy with excitement over getting another year of an elite player like Proctor and they really cannot wait to watch him tossing lobs to what looks like a super bouncy Blue Devil team next season. Tyrese showed improvement in many areas in the past campaign and the notion of him having another year of development and growth should have every Duke fan excited. It wasn't supposed to end this way. NC State knocked the Blue Devils out of the tournament, ending the season for a club that seemed poised to make a magical run to the Final Four. This simply wasn't Duke's day as the team suffered one of their worst shooting performances of the entire year and State ran away and hid on the backs of DJ Burns and DJ Horne. The DBR Podcast has a full breakdown of everything that happened in the contest from the good (like Jared McCain and Sean Stewart) to the bad (like the shooting woes and Duke's inability to get a stop in the second half). We’re still buzzing after Duke’s thrilling win in the Sweet 16 over the Houston Cougars, and we do a full recap on Episode 618! Branham is the voice of Cougars Basketball and has had the best seat in the house this season for Houston. So, he has a great perspective of what has made Houston so successful this season, their first in the Big XII. How sweet (16) it is! Duke walloped the Dukes of James Madison in a game that was dominated by the Blue Devils from the opening minutes. The Duke Basketball Roundup is going to have a full recap in their usual style tomorrow, but Jason and special guest Scott Rich wanted to hop on right away after the game was over to give a little instant reaction to the victory. Obviously, the story of the game was Jared McCain raining threes from all over the floor, breaking James Madison's spirit but the podcast guys also have tons of praise for Duke's overall effort, especially on the defensive end of the floor.
