Hibernation is a state of inactivity and metabolic depression in animals.It is an extended period of deep sleep that allows animals to survive winter extremes through cold periods when food is scarce or has little energy value. During hibernation consciousness is greatly diminished as animals are oblivious to their surroundings and are nearly impossible to wake up.
