    This weekend, we celebrate the freedom we have in this great nation. President Reagan reminded us that we must not take it for granted. "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same." As we continue in our series, the apostle Peter reminds us of a freedom we have been given through Jesus, a freedom that once received will not be taken away. It is this freedom that continues to serve as an encouragement to the new believers in Asia Minor. In our Scripture this week, Peter tells us that baptism serves to proclaim and remind us of this very freedom that we have received through Christ.

    There are many reasons to throw a party - birthdays, anniversaries, get-togethers and the list can go on. But what about a coming-home party? Have you ever participated in a coming-home party? There is excitement, expectation, emotion and celebration. This Sunday, we celebrate the coming home of the Prodigal Son and see the great joy it brought to the father who longed for his son to come home once again. Our Heavenly Father desires that all of us are at home with Him.

    This week in the "Coming Home For Christmas" series, we will be looking at the great love the father showed his prodigal son when he offered the wonderful gift of forgiveness. It is important for each one of us to know that we have a Heavenly Father who is ready to forgive and remove whatever it is that has been keeping us from enjoying a sweet fellowship with Him. We do have a responsibility in this forgiveness process and the prodigal son models it for us.

    "Coming Home For Christmas" reminds us of God's extreme love for us by giving the most precious and priceless gift ever - His Son, Jesus Christ. This morning as we look once again at the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), we get excited and rejoice in the homecoming festivities of a wayward son. Because God has called us and made it possible to be at home with Him through Christ, we have the privilege as a church family to participate in a even greater celebration known as Holy Communion. As the father reminded the older brother, "It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost and is found."

    Sunday, November 29, is the first Sunday in Advent. (Advent being the four Sundays prior to the celebration of Christ's birth). The theme for the season is entitled, "Come Home For Christmas" based on the parable of the prodigal son recorded in Luke 15:11-32. There is something about Christmas that draws people home. So many people will go through much effort, expense and hassle to get home for Christmas. It's just where one belongs at Christmas. Do you agree? To celebrate Christmas as God intended, God wants us to be at home with Him. In the next four weeks, we are going to unwrap what that looks like and feels like. You won't want to miss these heart-warming messages from God Who has given the invitation to all of us - "Come Home For Christmas."

  • Joshua's Thanksgiving

    Thanksgiving is here! It is a great time to gather with family and friends and celebrate that fact that we are a blessed people. God is good! There are many family traditions at Thanksgiving, with one being the opportunity for each person to share why they are thankful. The message today centers around the Old Testament character, Joshua. You are going to be asked to imagine that Joshua is at your Thanksgiving table and you are going to hear what he is thankful for as recorded in Joshua 1:1-11. I know some may be thinking Thanksgiving didn't take place until about 395 years (or so) ago. Let me tell you, that Thanksgiving has always been a theme echoed again and again in the Scriptures. May you all enjoy a Blessed Thanksgiving Day!

  • Living the Resurrection

    This week, we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ as recorded in Mark 15:40-16:8. What's the good of Christ's resurrection? This: it puts into our hearts and on our lips a song that soars with these joyous words: "Love's redeeming work is done, fought the fight, the battle won; death in vain forbids Him rise, Christ has opened Paradise. Alleluia!" This is victory! This Sunday, we will see what this victory has to offer.

  • The Cross Makes the Difference

    This week in our study of the Gospel of Mark, we are going to focus on the significance of the cross by looking at Mark 15:22-39. Your first reaction may be, "Why are we reading and learning about the crucifixion in October, shouldn't that be reserved for Holy Week in the spring time of the year? As I read the Scripture in preparation for the message, I found myself thinking - this is great - it's the theme all Christians should be focusing on every day of their lives! The cross represents grace, mercy, forgiveness, transformation and the opportunity to walk in a new and holy life. But it is the Christ of the cross that brings value to this well known symbol. The old rugged cross basks in the reflected glory of Christ who there "humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:8) The question is this: Has the cross made a difference for you?

  • Hard of Hearing

    There will be an opportunity for you to have your hearing checked this coming Sunday morning. The outcome of the test will not be determined by whether or not you hear certain sounds and pitches. Rather the test will determine whether you're really hearing God speak! God speaks to us in a very significant way through His Word - the Bible. Do you hear Him? Do you get the message? Are you listening? You'll have a pretty good idea at the end of the message whether you pass or fail your hearing test. God also desires that you listen to Him as He speaks through the celebration of Holy Communion. Read Mark 4:1-20 in preparation for worship this Sunday.

  • Come into My Heart, Lord Jesus

    Many of you learned this children's chorus which was often sung in Sunday School: "Into my heart, into my heart, come into my heart Lord Jesus. Come in today, come in to stay. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus." Bring back memories? I hope these words do more than bring back memories. I hope these words represent what drives you today in all that you do and in all that you say. In our study of the Gospel of Mark this week, we will continue our walk with Jesus and on top of the to do list is a heart examination. God's Word will show us what condition our heart should be in and if it needs attention, what we are to do about it?

  • A Week with Jesus

    We continue our study in the Gospel of Mark this week and will read about how and why Jesus was a magnetic attraction to suffering people. As we follow Jesus and observe His ministry, we must ask the questions, "How would I have responded if I were there when He healed the man with the unclean spirit? What would I have thought when I saw many people being healed? Or, what about when the lame man was lowered through the roof of the house where Jesus was teaching?" These are amazing accounts and demand a response. Come to think of it, why am I attracted to Jesus?

    Ready! Set! Go! For the next ten weeks, we will be blessed by spending time in the Gospel of Mark both in Sunday morning worship and small groups. As we read and study the Gospel of Mark together, my prayer is that we will be refreshed in our walk with Jesus, as well as having our passion for Him invigorated and lived out in our relationships with those we know, those we have been praying for and for those we may meet in the near future. I believe that through this study Canyon Lake Community Church will be energized with new fire and a revitalized spirit of service. This Sunday we will spend time in Mark 1:1-11. You may want to take the time and read through the entire Gospel of Mark. You will be blessed!

  • Teach Me How to Pray

    This Sunday, we have the joy of celebrating Holy Communion together as a church family. What a special privilege and honor to be invited by God to share in this Sacrament as we celebrate what Jesus Christ has done for us. As we participate, we are also mindful that God has called us to live The Adventure of Discipleship - to follow and honor Jesus Christ. To do that well, God has given us many resources, one of which is prayer. In Luke 11:1-13 we read what Jesus teaches us about prayer and why it is important to learn these truths and apply them to our daily lives.

    This week The Adventure of Discipleship has us traveling down the road of fruitfulness. In other words, as disciples of Jesus Christ what does God expect of us? How are we resourced to do the things that a disciple of Jesus Christ should be doing? These questions are answered in a very familiar and powerful message recorded in John 15:1-9.

    This week the Adventure of Discipleship takes us to Luke 14:25-35 as we are encouraged to consider the cost of discipleship. What comes to mind when Jesus says that He comes first, even before your family and yourself if you are going to be one of His disciples. That's only the beginning! Jesus also says that He expects you to bear your own cross if you want to be one of His disciples. All this seems pretty radical doesn't it? Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is more than just calling yourself a Christian.

    Do we really want the Kingdom of God if it means the absolute rule of the Lord in our lives? We may talk a great deal about our need for Christ in our lives, but how much do we want Him? Do we find ourselves at times making excuses when He invades our lives and wants to take charge of our minds and hearts? Is there the possibility that we want our relationship with Him on our own terms? As we continue in The Adventure of Discipleship series, these are some of the questions we will look at this Sunday based on the parable recorded in Luke 24. Jesus gives us great insight on what it means to be one of His disciples.
