The reason God asks this of us is because He ultimately wants to *give* and not take. Simply pursuing "church piety" without God at the center is not fruitful and is not true depth. There are 3 reasons one can associate with a sinner or sinful event. 1) To participate, 2) To condone or 3) To show love/light. The people murmured against Jesus because they assumed the first two.
