  • VWR11: World Champion Bill Zadick previews March 12 clinic; VAWA announces senior scholarship

    On Episode 11 of the Virginia Wrestling Roundup, Virginia Amateur Wrestling's Andrew Farrar, Bill Swink and Bryan Hazard are joined by NCAA and World champion Bill Zadick. Bill and his brother Mike, an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, will be doing a folkstyle to freestyle clinic at St. Christopher's in Richmond on March 12. Bill was an NCAA champion for Iowa and a 2006 World Champion and is currently a coach for the U.S. Freestyle National Team in Colorado Springs. Farrar also talks about the VAWA's new scholarship fund, open to any graduating senior who has competed for VAWA at any time. Deadline for applications is March 3.     The Virginia High School League is again under fire, this time coming from a Virginia Beach attorney who is seeking to make the voting procedure comparable to member schools. Attorney Kevin Martingayle is the father of several athletes, including wrestlers, and he's trying to get the word out about HB965, a bill that would force the VHSL to be more transparent and be subject to the Freedom of Information Act. On Episode 10 of the Virginia Wrestling Roundup, we'll talk with Martingayle, Hayfield head coach Roy Hill, Skyline head coach Matt Keel and VAWA Executive Director Andrew Farrar.     With the USA Wrestling Cadet & Junior Nationals on the horizon, the Virginia Wrestling Roundup fires up Episode 6 with VAWA Executive Director Andrew Farrar and Washington & Lee assistant coach Adam Wilson. The first portion of the show, we'll talk more about Washington & Lee, the oldest Division III wrestling program in the state of Virginia. Wilson is in his second year working under W&L coach Nathan Shearer and things are starting to move upward for the Generals program.     On Episode 3 of the Virginia Wrestling Roundup, we go around the state to talk to coaches about the complete disaster that resulted in the Virginia High School League's decision to abbreviate the public school state wrestling championships. On the panel for this show is Andrew Farrar, the Executive Director of VAWA. Andrew is an assistant coach at St. Christopher's School in Richmond. He clearly outlined how the private school faction in Virginia (VISAA) handled their state tournament, a two-day 32-man double elimination tournament with clear communication and had no problems getting things done.
