Once again, the Philistines, Israel's primary nemesis, were mounting up an attack. Out from the Philistine camp came an impressive figure - Goliath of Gath. He stood over 9 feet tall, wore over 150 lbs. of armor, carried a 12-foot spear and defiantly boasted against Yahweh and His people. Goliath brazenly challenged Israel to send a representative to fight him in a winner-take-all battle royale.--David sees this challenge purely in theological terms. In verse 26, he speaks for the first recorded time in the Bible- -Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God. In verses 45-47 we find that the glory of God motivates David to fight- -that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hand.---David defeats Goliath- What spiritual lessons can we learn from this, the most popular story in the Bible-- The text has been taught

Chapter 15 opens the third of three Acts in the drama of 1 Samuel- the sun is beginning to rise on -Twilight Kingdom.- Having closed the curtain on Saul's reign with the official record of his exploits in 14-47-52, from this point on, Saul's fall will serve as the backdrop of David's rise. --The priority of the human king who serves over Yahweh's kingdom is that he must obey God. However, just as he had done in chapter 13, King Saul again disobeyed God's clear instruction- this does not amount to merely a different expression of faith, but it is rebellion, arrogance, and idolatry. --In chapter 16, Yahweh sends the prophet Samuel to discover and anoint the man after His heart. One by one, Jesse brings seven of his sons before the prophet, and for all of them Samuel's response was, -the Lord has not chosen these- -16-10-. With each rejection, God confounded human wisdom and earthly standards, finally settling on the most unlikely son of Jesse. Yahweh could see what man could not - the heart. As He tells Samuel

Ruin can come suddenly. In chapters 11-12 of the book of 1 Samuel, it appeared as though the nation of Israel might experience sustained victory over their enemies, but the final words of Samuel suggest that he realized that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Samuel warned in 1 Samuel 12-24-25- -Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you. But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king. This is exactly what happened in the next chapter of the story.--Chapters 13-14 relay the dark narrative of Saul's failure and Israel's helplessness. Under the looming threat of the oppressive Philistines, King Saul took matters into his own hands. Rather than waiting for Samuel to arrive to offer the burnt offering, Saul panicked because of the desertion of his army and made the offering himself. This one act of disobedience and lack of trust was enough for God to take away the kingdom from Saul and give it

Chapters 9-10 of 1 Samuel narrate the identification and inauguration of Israel's king Saul. Saul was a man of impressive height and charm, fulfilling the physical expectation of a monarch. But he was also a poor shepherd as he failed to find his father's lost animals. When he and his companion gave up on their search and turned for home, they -happen to- run into Samuel. Samuel was given the special revelation that Saul would be the man chosen to govern Israel. When he was alone with Saul, Samuel anointed him and shared a very specific prophecy of events that would lead to the Spirit of God coming upon Saul in power. Curiously in verse 9 of chapter 10 it says, -God gave him -Saul- another heart.- What are we to make of this statement-- Many jump to the conclusion that this means that the Lord regenerated Saul. What do you think-- Was Saul a child of God-- Why or why not-- How would you defend your claim-- Whatever change happened in Saul's life, in the end, his life was a complete disaster. How can one's doc
