This year is an important one in our communities and in this country.  With a very important election coming up we wanted to introduce two new family members who are doing their part to make sure everyone has the knowledge and ability to participate in the upcoming elections.  Jay Claxton & Casay Vaughn, PhD are two DJ’s that are using their platform to help inform the community about the importance of getting out the vote.  They’ve created an organization called DJ’s Vote, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization committed to uplifting the community through education and activation.  They stopped by the Brownstone to share with us their journey and explain how important it is to exercise your right to vote. This week’s guest is a welcome addition to the family!  Sonya Jenkins is a multi-talented, creative genius behind the amazing book and film Shayla’s Catch.  Among the many hats, this amazing woman wears are actor, producer, director, author and anything else you can think of.  She is without a doubt an inspiration to anyone who has had roadblocks put in the way of their success.  Not content to let anything stand in her way or wait for the green light from someone else to make her dream happen she went out and did it herself.  With a film available right now on Amazon Prime Video and a book of the same name for purchase, she is living proof that if you work hard enough and don’t take no for an answer you can accomplish amazing things. Continuing our nostalgia run we had a chance to catch up with one our first guests and and all-time favorite, King Weave, Moses Overton!  It had been about two years since we last had a chance to talk with our brother and in that time his life has undergone some major changes.  Already one of the top stylists around he has been through the bumps and bruises to emerge on the other side even better and bigger than he was before.  We’re glad we got to speak with him and share his story of having a setback and coming back strong and determined. Welcome back, family! It’s been about a month since you’ve heard from us on and there’s a good reason why!  Your cousin went to the motherland!  That’s right y’all I had the opportunity to go to Africa and had to jump at it. We’ll talk more about that later but believe me when I say that if you ever get the chance to visit Africa whether you be Black, White, Latino, Asian you should definitely go!  There’s so much to learn about and experience and definitely well worth the trip. So, this week just to get us back in the swing of things we have a quick visit from our sister Lawonza Serenity.  She’s an up-and-coming PR person from the Atlanta area and she stopped by to talk with us about her journey to where she is now and where she’s headed.  We’re definitely going to be hearing a lot from her in the future and look forward to what she has coming up next.  Take a listen and be on the lookout for more content coming soon! We’ve been doing this show for a few years now and over that time we’ve had some pretty amazing guests.  We truly think of all our guests and listeners as a family and we try to keep track of all of our new aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Every now and again we get the chance to catch up with family and we jump at the opportunity.  Erin Stevenson is one of our favorite cousins and it’s been a few years since we talked on the mic.  We had to ask her about the Janet Jackson residency she just completed.  And, the last time she was here she was just launching her solo recording career so we had to get the update on that.  Now everyone knows that when the family gets together no conversation ends where it starts so we were all over the place.  But, we still had an amazing time.  You’re going to love this one! If you’re anything like me you’ve spent many hours in front of HGTV watching any number of house flipping shows.  One thing you learn very quickly is that every single flip requires one thing more than money.  A good contractor.  And this week’s guest is one of the select few who have been chosen to show off his impressive construction skills.  Jonathan Brewer has been in the construction industry most of his life and in the past few years has made the transition to television.  We are happy that he was able to stop by the Brownstone and share his career path, where he sees himself in the future and drop some tips for those of us who may catch the home renovation bug. It’s rare that we get to speak to someone on the cusp of greatness but that’s just what happened this week.  Yohance Myles is starring in the latest OWN network drama from Will Packer entitled Ambitions.  Before the premiere episode hit the air he stopped by and joined the family to tell us about his journey to this place in time, the importance of education in his journey and what it means to be a man and a father.  This conversation was one of the most enlightening and uplifting that we’ve had in a while and we wish him nothing but success with this new project.  Your new uncle is about to do big things family!
