    Diploma of Art & Creativity (Honours) students, Morrigan Smith and Aidan Walbaekken, talk about their art work. Aidan Walbaekken, a distance learning student and Oriel Hoskin Scholarship winner, through his art, raised funds for those affected by the Kaikoura earthquake. He has also been working on a series of large kiwiana murals and billboards. Morrigan Smith’s art making last year was a reflection of himself, a fusion of the male and female. He sought to find his own personal power and inner truth through art making.

He recently won 'Best National' and 'Best Regional (Wellington)' cinematography awards in the 2016 48HR Film Challenge. He is also a member of staff working at The Learning Connexion.     Artists and TLC graduates Lena Stackhouse and Shea Stackhouse featured in this month's Creativity Talk. Shea specialises in bladesmithing, carving and creating handmade Damascus cutlery and jewellery. He is also the co-ordinator for the 3D department at The Learning Connexion. Lena's work features intricately carved organic forms and small sculptural objects. She also works in the Media Resource Production Team at The Learning Connexion.     TLC’s first Artists Talk podcast of 2016 features Irena May Kennedy, a sculpture artist. Irena was born in Wellington and gained a BFA at the Dunedin School of Art, where she was awarded the David Con Hutton Memorial Scholarship. She recently completed her Master of Fine Arts at Monash University in Melbourne. The scope of her work ranges from giant toenail clippers and bronze dogs, to ceramic white clay tyres suspended by porcelain chains.

    Tattoo Art can be found all over the world. The various designs from different cultures and times are fascinating from traditional Maori Moko and Pacific Tatou to Russian sailor tattoos. Learning Connexion Graduate Brent Ryan discovered a love of design and drawing as a child. This long-standing passion evolved into a full-time career as a tattoo artist. Brent runs Jackson Street Tattoo in Petone and employs four other tattoo artists. He has travelled all over the world working in different studios and working at tattoo conventions. In this podcast hosted by Dan Wilkinson, Brent talks about running his own tattoo business, working with Maori and Pacific design and telling stories through tattoo art.

Rox has a busy lifestyle and building up his burgeoning business takes up all his spare time. He consciously maintains his art practise by carrying a sketchbook around, including to meetings. He has set up this website to post up work to help him be motivated to create. In this podcast, Rox shares his inspiring and enterprising story with our students. He is proud of what they have achieved and XEquals is a thriving Wellington digital business, with a good client base, talented employees, contractors and interns.

Visiting from Xiamen’s Jimei University, as part of the Wellington sister city programme, she is here to absorb the quirky creative culture that we Kiwis have on offer. The glitter and disembodied mannequins around our campus have made their mark on our foreign visitor. “The Learning Connexion exceeds my expectations…even the building is mixed with painting, installations, sculpture…it is so unique,” she says. In turn she is showcasing the fantastic artistic talent Jimei University has and sharing her own knowledge of the Chinese art scene with our staff and students.
