The word Messiah comes from the Hebrew word for "anointed": mashiyach (maw-shee'-akh) The Greek word "christos" is the exact equivalent of mashiyach. In the NAS, "mashiyach" is translated "Messiah" in just one passage. Dan 9:24-26 "mashiyach" a person who has been chosen by the Lord for a special office. In Chapter 7:26-42, groups of Jews mention the Christ, the Messiah, six times. Some understood that the Hebrew scriptures spoke of the Messiah who was to come. Mic 5:2-4 The Messiah in the Old Testament is a BIG BIG subject. The Messiah, the Christ, is central to the mission of the gospel of John. Joh 20:30-31 The subject of the Christ appears in chapters 1, 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, and 12. Joh 4:39-42 John the Baptist emphasized that he was NOT the Messiah. Joh 3:28 Jesus told the Samaritan woman that He was the promised Messiah. The first group is skeptical about Him. The second group is indignant at Him. The third group ends up believing in Him. But it is people from Jerusalem, as opposed to Jews in Galilee or the diaspora. They may also have recalled Jesus's earlier miracles in Jerusalem. These Jerusalemites were confused. They were REALLY surprised that the rulers didn't stop Him from speaking. Their beliefs about the Messiah came from their traditions, not the Scriptures. They THOUGHT they knew. After all, He came from Galilee; everyone knew that. Starting in verse 19, Jesus makes a specific application to His audience. Joh 5:45-47 Joh 7:19 Exhibit 1: they sought to murder an innocent Man - Jesus. Joh 5:5-18 They accused Him of being a law breaker, yet they actually broke the law themselves. Joh 7:20-24 This one deed was healing the man who had been paralyzed for 38 years. They were astonished, but they reacted very unfavorably. The Lord established a covenant with Abraham, the first Hebrew. Circumcision became the sign of this covenant. His Father has sent Him - to teach. They could not dispute His command of the scriptures, and they knew He had not studied under any of their prominent rabbis. Their manner of teaching was to cite this authority, that rabbi, and so forth. His teaching was not His own. He didn't invent it. Joh 3:31-35 His authority, quite simply, was God Himself! The Galilean ministry of Jesus continued after the events of chapter 6. John didn't record it. It can be found in Mat 14:34 - 18:35. Joh 6:4-5 Joh 7:2 Passover was a spring feast. 14th day of Nisan (the 1st month of the Hebrew year); our March-April Booths was a fall feast. the 15th -22nd days of Tishri (the 7th month of the Hebrew year); our Sept -Oct 6 Hebrew (lunar) months between the Passover and the Feast of Booths. How do they respond to Christ's words? They could not accept that Jesus was who He said He was. The words of Jesus bring each person to the fork in the road of their heart. Joh 3:18 In one camp live the ones who have believed in Christ. They have eternal life. In the other camp exist the ones who do not believe in Christ. He repeats Himself over and over, because His words are rejected over and over. There is this unnatural, unrelenting hostility toward everything Jesus says. I found no indication that anyone in that audience believed in Him after hearing it!! They hate Him without a cause. When we preach the good news of Christ, we also meet up with unnatural resistance. Joh 6:14-21 Chapter 6 follows the same sequence that chapter 5 did: miracles (Joh 6:1-25), followed by controversial teaching (Joh 6:26-58). #1: Jesus feeds the 5,000 men with five barley loaves and two fish. This miracle confirmed that Jesus was the Messiah - the Christ. The second miraculous episode in chapter 6: Jesus walks on the sea. This miracle demonstrated that Jesus was the Son of the Living God.
